Linus Publications, Inc. (“ActiveBook”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the ActiveBook reading applications for iOS, macOS, Android, and Windows and the website at activebook.ai (together, the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. It applies to all platforms on which ActiveBook is offered.
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to this Policy and to our Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account information — your name, email address, and password (stored only in hashed form). If you add a profile photo it is stored with your account.
- Social sign-in — if you sign in with Google, Apple, Microsoft, or LinkedIn, we receive your basic profile (name, email, and a provider account identifier) from that provider to create or link your account. We do not receive your provider password.
- Purchases — records of the books and content you buy. Payment card details are entered into and processed by our payment processor (Stripe) and are not stored on our servers. We retain order records (items, amounts, dates, and a payment reference).
- Content you create — highlights, notes, annotations, reviews, ratings, and wishlist items.
- Communications — messages you send us for support.
Information collected automatically
- Reading & usage data — your library, reading progress, and activity/exercise completions, so your place and progress sync across your devices.
- Device & session data — a device identifier we generate for your installation, together with app platform and version, stored as a device session on your account. We use this to keep you signed in, to secure your account, and to enforce our limit on the number of devices that may access purchased content at once.
- App verification data — our reader apps may attach a short-lived verification token to their requests so we can confirm the request comes from a genuine ActiveBook app. The token identifies the app installation, not your activity.
- Technical & log data — IP address, browser/WebView user agent, dates and times of requests, and error logs, used for security, fraud prevention, and diagnostics.
- Cookies — see “Cookies and similar technologies” below.
We do not knowingly collect precise location, contacts, photos, or microphone/camera data, and the apps do not use advertising identifiers or serve ads.
2. How we use your information
- Provide, maintain, and improve the Service and sync your reading across devices.
- Create and authenticate your account and keep you signed in.
- Process purchases and provide receipts and access to purchased content.
- Protect the Service and your account — including fraud prevention, abuse detection, and enforcing device and content-access limits.
- Respond to your support requests and send essential service messages (e.g. account, security, or transaction notices).
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
We use strictly necessary cookies and local storage to operate the Service — for example a session cookie to keep you signed in and a security token that confirms a request comes from a genuine ActiveBook app. We do not use advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking cookies. For a full list of the cookies we set and why, see our Cookie Policy.
4. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only as follows:
- Service providers — companies that process data on our behalf under contract, including our payment processor (Stripe, which processes your payment details on its own hosted checkout pages), our hosting/infrastructure provider, our font-delivery CDN (fonts.bunny.net, which receives your IP address in order to serve font files and sets no cookies), and email delivery. They may use your information only to provide services to us.
- Identity providers — when you choose social sign-in, we exchange the information described above with Google, Apple, Microsoft, or LinkedIn.
- Legal and safety — when required by law, legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of ActiveBook, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
5. Your content and its visibility
Reviews and ratings you post are public and appear with your account name on the relevant book’s page. Highlights, notes, and annotations are private to your account and are not visible to other users. Wishlist and library contents are private. We may moderate or remove public reviews as described in our Terms of Service.
6. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. We retain certain records (such as transaction records) as required for legal, accounting, or security purposes. When information is no longer needed we delete or anonymize it.
7. Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can exercise these rights by contacting us at privacy@activebook.ai. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
California residents (CCPA/CPRA): we do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under California law. You may request access to or deletion of your information as described above.
EEA/UK residents (GDPR): our legal bases for processing are performance of our contract with you, your consent (where applicable, e.g. social sign-in), our legitimate interests in securing and improving the Service, and compliance with legal obligations.
9. Deleting your account and data
You can request deletion of your ActiveBook account and associated personal data at any time by emailing privacy@activebook.ai from the address on your account, or by using the account-deletion option in the app or website where available. We will delete your personal data within a reasonable period, except for records we are required to retain by law (for example, transaction records).
10. Children’s privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. International data transfers
We may process and store information in countries other than where you live. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
12. Third-party links
The website may link to third-party sites we do not control. This Policy does not apply to those sites, and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.
13. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide additional notice where appropriate.
